Project Narrative
Nestled discreetly within the rugged foothills of Mt. Rose, below Galena and the transition to alpine forest, this residence is a refined expression of its natural surroundings. Designed to sit harmoniously within the landscape, the home’s low silhouette gently settles into the terrain, echoing the land forms and minimizing visual impact. Its parti is singular with rhythm expressed in material changes and extruded forms which echo the interior program and use.
Strategically positioned to capture breathtaking views, the residence overlooks downtown Reno, the Carson Range to the West, and the Virginia Range to the East. Expansive glass walls and sliding doors seamlessly connect the interior spaces to the outdoors. A seamless connection from indoor to outdoor living environment that celebrates panoramic vistas and our region.
Built as a full-time residence for two empty nesters, with the flexibility to host their college-aged children during vacations and holidays, the home accommodates a thoughtful layout across approximately 4,300 square feet of conditioned space. It features four bedrooms and four and a half baths, with an attached 1,700 square foot three-car garage, a secondary two-car garage, and a workshop. The single-story plan is divided for privacy and views, with a master suite positioned to maximize scenic outlooks and quiet.
Materials are intentionally chosen to evoke the home’s rugged yet refined character. Exposed board-formed concrete provides textured stability at the foundation and fireplace walls, while natural stone accents deepen the connection to the earth. Vertical gray-stained wood siding introduces a sleek, slender aesthetic aligned with the landscape, contrasted by warm, weathered clear cedar finishes under broad overhangs that offer shelter and tactile richness. The architectural details, including overhanging roofs and slender columns, create a sense of lightness and warmth.
