THE AIA NEVADA 2019 EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN AWARDS RECIPIENTS

   MERIT AWARD - ACADEMIC CATEGORY
   Presented to
   DOMINIC ARMENDARIZ, ASSOC. AIA
   For
   DANCING IN THE DUSTLAND
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "A well-thought out solution for an infill site.  The design decisions are executed well with a few minor practical considerations that would need to be addressed in the real world, but that’s the beauty of academia.”

   Presented to
   MAELLE AGEA, ASSOC. AIA &
   AIAS FREEDOM BY DESIGN

   For
   CASA DE LUZ

Jury Comments: "The Jury was unanimous in recognizing this as an honor award. The submission was powerful in describing the process and educational benefits of working with the community to program, design, and build this simple intervention which transformed the everyday into a welcoming space in the neighborhood.”

                                                 DISTRICT EAST LAS VEGAS LIBRARY

Jury Comments: "We all thought that this building was exceptionally well planned, the inward plaza elegantly resolves the dynamic geometry in both plan and elevation and creates a beautiful spatial sequence.”

   CITATION AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
   COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE

   Presented to
   PUNCH ARCHITECTURE
   For
   COLORADO PROFESSIONAL FIRE FIGHTERS
   CENTER
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "This is a beautifully executed adaptive reuse of a 1970’s era brutalist style brick building. The exterior walls were sandblasted to restore their original colors, the building opened up to invite the public, and the entries were expanded to deal with snow and storm runoff accumulation.”

   CITATION AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
   COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE

   Presented to
   VAN WOERT BIGOTTI ARCHITECTS
   For
   USAC
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "The client requested an ‘iconic modern facility that is engaging and attractive’, to expand their mission to expand horizons and inspire minds. We all think the architect delivered with this bold design that incorporates views, art and symbolism into its open planning. New materials were all locally sourced including kill beetle pine and repurposed white oak which was used to warm up the interior.”

   MERIT AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
   RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE / INTERIORS

   Presented to
   LAKE FLATO ARCHITECTS
   For
   HORIZON HOUSE
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "The use of locally sourced natural materials such as the 30” thick rammed earth walls, weathered steel, polished concrete, decomposed granite and clear sealed wood soffits help connect the home to the surrounding landscape and natural environment. (that’s straight from the submission) We all thought this was the best of the ‘big’ residential projects because of the way it relates to the site, hugging the ground plain.”

   MERIT AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
   COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE

   Presented to
   DLR GROUP
   For
   UNIVERSITY ARTS BUILDING
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "We all agreed that this addition is simply a wonderful solution, tying harmoniously to the existing one story structure, utilizing similar materials and forms, yet opening up to new program space as the addition steps down the site.”

  MERIT AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
  RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE / INTERIORS

   Presented to
   JACK HAWKINS & ASSOCIATES
   For
   KULIKOWSKI MODERN INFILL
Click here to see the Entry

Jury Comments: "This project is precious, and deeply important as an example to saving and older structures and neighborhoods. The house is small, the     lot is barely 1/10 acre. Careful study of the existing plan allowed a transforming scheme to be realized. The power of doing little created a wonderful oasis. .”

   HONOR AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY
   COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE

   Presented to
   PUNCH ARCHITECTURE
   For
