The 2018 AIA NEVADA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WINNERS

  AIA Nevada Silver Medal

This is the highest honor that the AIA Nevada Chapter can bestow upon an individual.  It is given in recognition of the most distinguished service to the profession of architecture and a significant body of work of lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture in the state of Nevada.
No more than one award is given in any year.

Presented to R. Brandon Sprague, AIA

The jury felt his submittal demonstrated the intent of the awards for a distinguished career in service to the profession coupled with a significant body of widely recognized work.  Though Mr. Sprague’s firm, APTUS is just 15 years old, over this short period, they have received thirteen AIA design awards.  The jury noted not only his service to AIA Las Vegas as past President but also his community by mentoring of students both at VoTech High School and the UNLV School of Architecture.  He has dedicated much service to public libraries, environmental stewardship and city master-planning. Setting the example for the firm he led in the post-relief effort.

AIA Nevada Firm of the Year Award

This is the highest honor that the AIA Nevada Chapter can bestow upon an architecture firm.  It is awarded to recognize a firm that has consistently produced distinguished architecture and has shown a commitment to the AIA and the profession of architecture and has been a service to the community in which they are located.

Presented to Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects

Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects has received over 35 AIA Design Awards over the last 32 years, including what the jury found impressive, the consistency of high-level performance through a transition in firm ownership.  This is a testament to the strong firm ethic of design quality and service.  The firm is admirable for mentoring of interns and encouraged community engagement that sees built into their DNA.  They have engaged with over 23 different community organizations and as one reference letter recognized “that commitment to the betterment of their own community and students is what distinguishes this firm.

AIA Nevada Service Award

The Service Award is presented to the individual AIA Member who has contributed significantly  to the profession of architecture through service to the American Institute of Architects

  Presented to Jonathan Sparer, FAIA

Jon Sparer, FAIA has gone the extra mile in holding practically every leadership position at various levels while co-chairing the A’19 Conference on Architecture, and the 2017 AIA Western Mountain Region Conference.  His service to the profession and community after retirement from practice when most architects are chasing bucket lists, shows his genuine care for the future of the profession with little regard for personal gain.  His leadership in igniting interest, education and passion for architecture in the next generation through outreach to elementary, middle and high school students, his mentoring in the UNLV School of Architecture Hospitality Design Department and leading through building design and personal service to the Jewish and LGBTQ communities impressed the jury.

service to the profession

  Presented to Chris Lujan, AIA

The jury was impressed with Chris Lujan’s compelling and concise presentation that demonstrated the inflexion between career and service to the profession and community.  Just out if school for less than ten years, Chris has risen to Senior Associate at TSK Architects, confirming the Outstanding Graduate Student Award that he received at UNLV.  He has received numerous design awards for projects under his direction and in addition has worked hard to support the Archipac, mentored interns, served on many committees and aided the community in supporting the “Bald By Design” program funding research to cure childhood cancer.
