"Who ever thought a visit to the DMV would be fun?  Well, these architects figured out how to do it. We loved the use of natural light in the main waiting area. With just one simple move of lifting up the roof and allowing for a strong architectural presence and daylight this project truly elevates the typology of a DMV office to a new level.  We applaud both the effort and the result."

The juror’s thought this was  “A sweet school project which brings good design to a challenging program type.  We appreciated the use of strong color, graphic mural, and inspiring roof form.  Moves like the “Ronchampian” window wall, brightly colored central commons stair and the well-scaled central courtyard spread the positive design vibes  throughout the project – and throughout the students’ day.”

The jurors appreciated the simplicity of forms and austerity of the material palette. "There was a quiet tranquil beauty in the courtyard spaces, that opened up to the sky. Not every house wants to be exposed and open, and this introverted house carefully opens up to the exterior where the grand view warrants it."

The Jurors commented - "A thoughtful reuse of a neighborhood resource.  An interactive community process clearly informed the design.  The planning and programming reflect the community need for a 21st century library, a place for gathering, learning and connecting with resources.  The entry plaza is welcoming and engaging, with a very open and elegant entry elevation.  This project does a lot with a little.”

"With a very small budget, the designers were asked to elevate and showcase this technical college in order to better recruit and retain students and to  more accurately reflect the value of the programs housed within.  With a relatively minor intervention the architects were able to transform a banal functional community college building into a 21st century higher education learning environment."

The jurors  liked "the subtle natural building and landscaping palette. The building blends into the landscape which blends into the desert site with the various gravels and gabion walls. Interesting siteing, on a desert arroyo that is part of the residential neighborhood yet opens up to incredible views of wilderness."

"This project used a pre-engineered metal building system for cost reasons, but it was not constrained by the system.  The architects expressed the frame of the pre-engineered building on the exterior and nested two frames to highlight the programs within.  Freeing the structure from the enclosure allowed for a well composed and dynamic exterior and interior"

"A beautifully balanced concept with well-conceived planning allows this project to appropriately live within its context yet stand out in moments of stunning beauty.  Strong use of site sensibly solves vehicular arrival while simultaneously giving the home a unique street presence.  Minimal, strategic space planning engages the user to the landscape and valley beyond. Thoughtful use of materials support each space individually while unifying the project through a series of distinct yet connected moments.  Quality construction and strong attention to detail, color and connectivity set this project apart."
