Project Summary
The Winnemucca Aquatic Center is a state-of-the-art facility intended to replace the City’s current aging pool. The new building has been designed with two bodies of water to accommodate a variety of programs that can be enjoyed by the entire community.
Project Narrative
Struggling to support their high school swimming program and growing population of young families, the City of Winnemucca made the decision to replace their existing nearly 50-year-old pool with a new state of the art aquatic facility. The existing facility was outdated, undersized, inefficient, and not up to the current code. The small pool size and lack of amenities, such as adequate restrooms and deck space for spectators, makes it impossible for the City to host swim meets.
When selecting a location for the new facility, an option was explored to rebuild on the site of the existing pool. This was desirable due to the central location in town; however, it would mean significant downtime while the old pool is demolished and the new is built. Ultimately a site was selected within the Ralph Whitworth Recreational Complex and the aquatic facility was incorporated into the overall master plan. Key benefits of this site are consolidating the City’s sports resources into one area and the direct adjacency to the high school, making it easier than ever for the team to practice.
The top priorities for the new building were first and foremost improved safety and accessibility, followed closely by the ability to host competitive regional swim meets and a variety of other aquatics programming including swim aerobics, dive in movies, and swim lessons. To achieve the desired functions, it was decided that the aquatics center would have two bodies of water - a ten lane 25 yard by 25-meter competition pool and a shallow water recreation pool. To take advantage of the new aquatic center’s location next to the existing park splash pads, a 90-foot operable glass wall was designed into the natatorium allowing for a seamless indoor/outdoor pool experience. Ample deck space is provided for not only spectator seating, but also deck activities like yoga.
Support spaces include large, modern locker rooms, family restrooms, a staff office, lifeguard office, training room, multipurpose room, storage, and pool chemical and equipment rooms.
Sustainable Design & Materials
The facility is composed of two separate structural systems - the steel framed natatorium and a lower height CMU volume that houses the support spaces.
Client requests for the design aesthetic of the new aquatic center were to complement the existing Boys and Girls Club that is in the same recreation complex. A secondary request was incorporating elements of nature and natural materials and textures. To achieve this the high-volume natatorium is wrapped in blue fiber cement panels that tie into the blue metal cladding of the Boys and Girls Club while the lower volume utilizes a stacked stone cladding. Entry points to the building are accented with a wood look fiber cement panel and topped with a bronze metal panel canopy.
The envelope of the building has been designed with high thermal performance, particularly the natatorium which requires a delicate interior environment to maintain proper pool balance. Natural daylighting and ventilation are utilized to reduce reliance on HVAC and electrical equipment.
Advanced UV filtration systems are used in the pool circulation to reduce the need for chemicals, lowering the environmental impact while improving water quality. The pools will utilize a saltwater system, eliminating any need for chlorine.
