Project Summary

The project is a design for a memorial and healing garden related to a tragic shooting that occurred in December 6, 2023. The goal is to honor 3 deceased faculty members as well as one survivor while also providing a contemplative and four-season natural enclave for students, faculty and visitors. It is largely a landscape design yet features 4 distinct dryscaped areas; each dedicated to the victims and survivor. The goal is to provide a natural enclave that appropriately recalls the tragic events of the day while also creating a contemplative space that can be used and appreciated year-round.

Project Narrative

"From Darkness - Light" Our design approach begins with a deep understanding and appreciation for the weight of the events of December 6th. Our project work rarely has to acknowledge such difficult topics. With this in mind, we have worked to establish a series of touchstones and references that will drive the project ideas and decisions. These references are about conveying feelings and engaging the sense. Specific formal gestures and architectural solutions will emerge from our discussions, feedback and an iterative sketching. Our goal is to ensure that the project not only represents all key influences from the university family and victims, but also serves as a beacon of hope for the future. The project will balance a sense of community with moments of solitude and reflection. It will feature carefully curated landscape planting that evolves throughout the year and matures over the life of the project. Material selections will be directly affiliated with a sense of reflection, texture, permanence and enduring quality. The project will be a touchstone for memories and positive metaphor to bring light where there was once darkness and love where it is most needed. Design Concept “BLOOM” Various design concepts were explored and presented to the December 6 Committee for review. The selected final design, titled “BLOOM,” features four distinct memorial zones arranged around a central, iconic elm tree. Each zone is thoughtfully curated to honor one of our colleagues, incorporating landscape elements reflective of their personal preferences and cultural heritage. The planting also will encourage hummingbirds and butterflies to frequent the garden, adding an ephemeral quality to the experience. A gently meandering path guides visitors through the garden, encouraging quiet reflection and emotional decompression. Each zone includes seating areas and is shaded by a lush, serene landscape. Curated biographies, quotes, and personal stories are integrated throughout the space to celebrate and remember those we have lost and those who survived.

Sustainable Design & Materials

The project is largely a landscape design endeavor. The goal is to ensure the construct will be easily maintained and long-lasting with little maintenance. Careful attention was given to water flow patterns. The used of dryscape and decomposed granite affords a permeable yet walkable surface. Plant selections were all in coordination with the Southern Nevada Water Authority's approved list. These selections were also poetically aligned with plants that are connected to each of the 4 victims' heritage. Additionally - the plants are carefully chosen to ensure there is a four-season landscape expression, providing color and interest year-round. The built forms will be GFRC. This will ensure durability and accuracy with less on-site formwork. All lighting is LED. Additional materials such as signage and plaques will be of recycled content.
