Project Summary
Entrusted to conceive and execute an immersive design encompassing architecture, interiors, and exterior environments, the assignment was clear yet lofty: to create a residence that embodies connection, contrast, and context.
Perched atop a natural rise in the Nevada desert, the home takes its name from a rare landform where a narrow strip of land links two separate masses. That metaphor of union became the conceptual spine of the project. The design balances monumental architecture with intimate experience, merging exposure and shelter, performance and poetry.
At the end of its private drive, the desert yields to a forecourt defined by stone ribs, rhythmic colonnades, and an oculus framing the sky. Within, spaces unfold as a sequence of curated vignettes structured through Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square studies. These explorations of nested proportion and relational color provided a framework for organizing distinct rooms as self-contained compositions while maintaining a cohesive rhythm across the whole.
Layered materials and textured surfaces soften architectural rigor while amplifying sensory richness. Beyond craft, the residence is an environmental response: orientation, courtyards, and thermal mass stabilize conditions, while operable windows capture desert winds for passive cooling. More than a home, it is an inhabitable meditation on connection.
Project Narrative
Perched atop a natural mound in the Nevada desert, this residence was conceived as an inhabitable meditation on connection. Its name, drawn from the rare landform that links two previously separated entities, became both metaphor and mandate: to bridge exposure and shelter, strength and subtlety, permanence and transformation. Elevated above the desert floor, the home embraces the grandeur and fragility of its setting, its bold geometries and rhythmic colonnades creating a sculptural dialogue of light, shadow, and form.
The design unfolds as a carefully choreographed procession. At the base of the approach, the raw desert yields to an arrival court, where vertical stone ribs assert both monumentality and rhythm. Beyond this threshold, the rigor of the exterior softens. The spatial order was structured using Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square studies, which investigate the perceptual effects of nested proportion and chromatic hierarchy. Translated into architecture, this framework organizes the interiors as a series of vignettes: each room a self-contained composition, yet integral to the larger narrative. Corridors are not voids but activated passages, furnished sequences where sculpture, framed views, and suspended light contribute to an unfolding story.
Programmatically, the residence accommodates both daily living and expansive gatherings. A grand stair rises through a double-height void, wrapped in hand-finished wallcoverings and mirrored panels, while the kitchen, anchored by a monumental range, functions as a ceremonial centerpiece rather than a purely utilitarian hub. The primary suite transitions from luminous glass corridors to tactile layers of stone, brass, and carved wood, enacting the metaphor of bridging elemental strength with intimacy.
Environmental extremes shaped both form and performance. The desert’s intense sun, open exposure, and dramatic temperature swings informed the buttress-like stone ribs, which absorb heat by day and release it at night to stabilize interiors. Colonnades and overhangs choreograph shade and light, while operable windows and courtyards harness prevailing winds for passive cooling. Green roofs insulate the structure and visually soften the massing, embedding resilience into the architectural expression.
Materiality further enriches the narrative. Patinated metals, honed stone, and layered textiles transform what might otherwise be austere into a tactile, emotionally resonant environment. Each surface was selected for its ability to register light differently, capturing subtle shifts throughout the day. Proportional rigor, rhythmic repetition, and carefully aligned transitions ensure continuity between exterior and interior.
Ultimately, the residence reframes desert living as a contemplative journey. It dissolves boundaries between architecture, interiors, and landscape, transforming elemental conditions into sensory experiences. More than shelter, it is a landmark of personal meaning, an experiential work where land, light, geometry, and memory converge.
Sustainable Design & Materials
Sustainability in this residence is inseparable from its architectural language, embedded in form, material, and orientation rather than applied technologies. The design engages its setting as both architecture and landscape, aligning with the desert’s rhythms while supporting equitable communities through a model of healthy, resilient living.
Buttress-like stone ribs act as structural and environmental devices, their energy performance rooted in thermal mass that absorbs and releases heat to stabilize interiors. Overhangs and colonnades choreograph shade and light, reducing demand on mechanical systems. Operable windows and a central courtyard capture prevailing winds for natural ventilation, advancing well-being through comfort, daylight, and connection to open air.
Green roofs insulate while visually merging the home with its context, reinforcing ecosystems and continuity with the desert environment. Indigenous, drought-tolerant plantings reduce irrigation and protect scarce water resources.
Material choices prioritized resources that are local, durable, and non-toxic: stone, wood, patinated metal, and natural wallcoverings balance longevity with environmental quality. The project anticipates change, employing passive strategies that respond to climate extremes and adapt over time.
At every scale, light, shadow, and materiality foster discovery, cultivating awareness of environment and place. The result is an architecture where environmental responsibility and sculptural elegance are inseparable.
